Services

No matter what kind of eye care you need, you can rest assured that Cookeville Eye Specialists is here to provide a personal commitment to our patient’s vision. With vision correction procedures like LASIK, SMILE, and cataract surgery, our patients will see the world around them in a new light.

LASIK

LASIK is a laser vision correction procedure that corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. LASIK removes a precise and predetermined amount of tissue from the cornea to correct vision using a femtosecond laser and an excimer laser. By getting LASIK, patients can achieve visual freedom and no longer depend on glasses and contact lenses to see their world. Their vision is also crisper, sharper, and clearer than it was with visual aids because the vision correction procedure improves vision beyond what glasses and contact lenses are capable of.

Vision with LASIK exceeds the original prescription, so most patients have 20/20 vision or better after having LASIK. Most patients are good candidates for LASIK, although a LASIK consultation is the only way to find out. A good LASIK candidate should be at least 18 years old, be in good health with healthy eyes, have thick enough corneas to undergo LASIK, not be currently pregnant or nursing, have a stable prescription that hasn’t changed in a year or more and have realistic expectations about what LASIK can achieve.

These are only some factors that make up LASIK candidacy, making a LASIK consultation essential.

SMILE

Another laser vision correction procedure offered at Cookeville Eye Specialists in Cookeville, TN, is SMILE. SMILE is a procedure suited for patients with nearsightedness and astigmatism. SMILE uses a femtosecond laser to create a lenticule. A lenticule is a piece of tissue about the size and shape of a contact lens in the cornea.

After creating the lenticule, a small incision is made, and the lenticule is removed. By removing the lenticule through the incision, your surgeon at Cookeville Eye Specialists can correct your vision and improve how light focuses on the retina at the back of the eye.  SMILE is a minimally invasive procedure since the incision created is quite small. Recovering after SMILE takes very little time, with patients experiencing minimal discomfort.  Most patients find that they experience almost instant visual improvements. You may notice your vision has changed for the better only a few hours after having SMILE.

You should be able to return to your routine only a few days after SMILE and enjoy your favorite activities with clearer vision. SMILE is also often a better choice for patients with dry eyes because it removes less tissue from the cornea to correct refractive errors.  SMILE is best for patients with nearsightedness and some astigmatism. You’ll need a stable prescription that has stayed the same for at least a year to qualify for SMILE.

If you lead an active lifestyle, SMILE is worth considering because there is less risk of complications due to trauma to the eye after the procedure since there is no flap created during SMILE, unlike the flap created during LASIK. Most patients that choose SMILE end up with 20/20 vision or better, making it an excellent vision correction procedure to consider.

Cataract & Premium Lenses

If you have cataracts, choosing an intraocular lens (IOL) before the procedure is essential. Patients that want the best possible vision after cataract surgery may consider premium lenses, which can correct refractive errors, along with other vision conditions like presbyopia. At Cookeville Eye Specialists, we offer the following premium lenses:

Vivity

The Vivity IOL is the first and only non-diffractive extended depth of focus (EDOF) lens. The premium IOL can treat presbyopia, which occurs when the eye’s natural lens loses flexibility due to aging.

When you have presbyopia, seeing things up close becomes more challenging. The Vivity IOL uses proprietary X WAVE technology to reduce glare while enhancing contrast sensitivity, which makes it easier to see in different lighting conditions, including when it’s very bright or if you’re somewhere dim or poorly lit.

Its extended depth of focus design creates a gradual transition between different focus zones. Patients experience better visual acuity while reducing their dependence on glasses and visual aids after cataract surgery.

PanOptix Trifocal IOL

The PanOptix trifocal IOL is a trifocal lens, allowing patients to see clearly up close, further away at a distance, and intermediate distances.

In addition to treating cataracts during cataract surgery, the PanOptix trifocal IOL treats refractive errors and presbyopia. The PanOptix lens uses ENLIGHTEN Optical technology that optimizes how much light can reach the retina.

By optimizing how much light reaches the retina, patients with the PanOptix trifocal lens have improved visual acuity and can reduce their dependence on visual aids. The PanOptix IOL uses a diffractive design to split light into several focal points to improve a patient’s ability to see well up close, far away, and distances in between.

Toric IOLs

A toric IOL is the only IOL specifically designed to correct astigmatism. Astigmatism is a refractive error that occurs when the cornea is an irregular shape, leading to distorted vision.

Toric lenses are a particular shape, compensating for the cornea’s irregular form, and help to eliminate astigmatism and improve a patient’s visual acuity. Other premium lenses like the PanOptix trifocal IOL and the Vivity IOL come in toric models and have different powers to suit patients’ needs.

Light Adjustable Lens

The Light Adjustable Lens is an innovative and new type of IOL that can be customized to your vision after it’s implanted in your eye during cataract surgery. This lens is unique because it contains tiny light-sensitive particles that can change shape when exposed to a precise type of light. After you’ve healed from cataract surgery with the Light Adjustable Lens, you will return to your eye doctor’s office for a series of light treatment sessions to sharpen and fine-tune your vision.

During these sessions, your eye doctor will use a special light device to shine ultraviolet light onto the implanted lens, altering its curvature and focus ability. The entire light adjustment process to perfect the lens takes just minutes, is completely painless, and happens right in your eye doctor’s office. With this innovative lens that can be reshaped after surgery, you can enjoy customized sharp vision targeted to your unique eye.
