DSLT

Voyager™ DSLT

Cookeville Eye Specialists now offers Voyager™ DSLT (Direct Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty), one of the newest laser treatments for glaucoma. Dr. DeNaro and Dr. Jones perform this procedure at our Cookeville office, meaning patients across the Upper Cumberland can get advanced glaucoma care without traveling to a larger city.

What is Voyager DSLT?

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve, usually because pressure inside the eye, called intraocular pressure or IOP, rises over time. Vision lost to glaucoma cannot be restored, so keeping eye pressure under control is the most important part of protecting your sight.

For many years, prescription eye drops have been the usual starting point for glaucoma treatment. Laser procedures and surgery came later, as the disease advanced. Drops work only if you use them every day, and many patients struggle with the cost, side effects, or remembering every dose.

Voyager DSLT offers a different starting point. This gentle laser treatment lowers eye pressure without daily medication, and you can use it as a first-line treatment instead of saving it for later.

How Does Voyager DSLT Work?

Your eye constantly produces fluid, and that fluid drains through a natural drainage network. In open-angle glaucoma, this drainage system slowly becomes less efficient. Fluid builds up, and pressure rises.

Voyager DSLT delivers 120 precisely controlled laser pulses to the drainage area. The laser energy triggers your eye’s healing response, helping fluid flow out more freely and lowering eye pressure.

The main difference from older laser treatments is how the laser reaches your eye. Traditional laser trabeculoplasty requires a special lens placed directly against the eye so the doctor can aim at the drainage area. Voyager DSLT doesn’t require a contact lens. It reaches the drainage system directly through the cornea’s edge, the clear front window of your eye. The system positions and delivers each pulse automatically, so the treatment is quick and consistent.

Because the laser helps your eye’s drainage work better on its own, it can reduce or even replace the need for daily drops. It also provides lasting pressure control.

Is Voyager DSLT Right for Me?

Voyager DSLT may be a good choice if you have open-angle glaucoma or high eye pressure (ocular hypertension). It is especially worth considering if you:

DSLT is designed for open-angle glaucoma, so it is not the right fit for every type of glaucoma. Some patients still need drops after treatment, and regular checkups remain essential.

At your consultation, Dr. DeNaro or Dr. Jones will examine your eyes and review your eye pressure, current medications, and overall eye health. Your eye doctor will also discuss your daily routine and goals. Together, you’ll decide whether Voyager DSLT belongs in your glaucoma treatment plan.

Take the Next Step in Your Glaucoma Care

Managing glaucoma is a lifelong commitment, and the right treatment can make it much easier. Voyager DSLT gives you a way to control eye pressure without having to remember drops every morning and night.

Dr. DeNaro, Dr. Jones, and our team know that no two glaucoma patients are alike. We take the time to understand your condition and build a treatment plan that fits your life. That applies whether you’re newly diagnosed or ready for an alternative to your current routine.
